M Sur Masson

M sur Masson: A feast for your taste buds

The 411

M Sur Masson Montreal outisdeThe only thing I love more than discovering new places that I have never heard of before is finding one in my neighbourhood and that was M sur Masson. Situated in Rosemont, M sur Masson has been known as a really great place to have a good French Bistro meal. It is in a very interesting area in the east end where you will see big changes going on in the neighborhood – old neglected areas make way for newer younger restaurants stores and homes. The area is young, vibrant and changing before your eyes and I expect that even more places will open up and offer new and innovative food creations.

outside-em-cafe-montrealSituated on Parc Street just south of Bernard, Em Cafe is a place you would likely miss. Yet, when you step in you will see how it is more than an unassuming place and that it manages to serve up a laid back atmosphere where one can sit down and have the hours melt away.

Serre Picasso R.I.P.

Picasso’s Closes It’s Doors

Picasso Serre now closedI just found out that the popular 24 hour, never-closes-its-doors restaurant Serre Picasso just did so, citing poor economy as their reason. This establishment was a Montreal landmark, serving up around the clock food and filling the stomachs of hungry patrons, whether they be after-clubbers still drunk from partying or local people living in or working in the area. It was one of those places where you could order breakfast at any hour of the day. Turns out they did the unthinkable and shut their doors on Friday and news of this broke on CTV this Wednesday. Picasso’s was a dying bread among breakfast places; it had simple, no thrills hearty food and it was relatively cheap, not to mention it never closed, well, until now… The owner Peter Sergakis said in the CTV interview that they are looking for someone to take over Picasso’s. I do hope someone does so, but without changing it too much, even though you know they most likely will. If that doesn’t happen then it’s goodbye to a dear old friend who will be missed. You can watch the interview with the owner, an employee and a patron here. As always if anyone finds our more about this or wants to say anything please post a comment bellow.

Egg (NYC)

Egg – Brooklyn stand up

The 411

Outside Egg Brooklyn New YorkOn a recent trip to New York we ended up staying in Brooklyn and felt the need to explore the Williamsburg area to see what there was to feed our stomach in the early morning hours. The first day my suggestion was outvoted and the majority’s choice produced a disastrous experience at a place that I refuse to review since reliving the memory will only cause me pain. Now after that experience we went to Egg on the second day and it was amazing, helping to suppress the painful memory of the morning before. (more…)

valentines

montreal best romantic brunchRomantic Brunchromantic brunch Montreal

Valentines day is a special day. It’s that special fake holiday between New Years and Easter (I say fake because unless I get a day off it’s not a real holiday). It’s that day when couples brave the frigid temperature to come out and plan that special romantic day. Now I’m going to avoid complaining on how there are 364 other days in the year (and a bonus one on leap years), nor will I complain on how all my favourite bars and restos get taken over by couples and I can’t even find a spot – I won’t even discuss the excessive PDA’s (public display of affection). Instead, I will be constructive and list some of the most romantic brunch locations in Montreal.

L’orignal

NO LONGER SERVES BRUNCH

L’orignal – The Moose is Loose

The 411

L’Orignal is popular restaurant in the old Montreal and on weekends the party goes on right until 3 AM. So, when I found out that in the early Fall they began to offer brunch on Sundays I was curious to see how a supper club would handle brunch especially since I feel that most dinners I have eaten at supper clubs are usually fancy, overpriced and leave me hungry. However, what I found was a pleasant surprise and made my Sunday.

At 1st glance

Outside view“Orignal” in French means “moose” and the decor for some reason works with this. From the moment you see the front door you notice a moose shaped metal statuette mounted to it and when you walk in you will find a rich usage of wood in the floor and walls. The walls also keep the original stone look of the building which adds some charm to it. There is plenty of seating and no lineup. In fact, since it is so recent and is situated in the old port its likely you will never have to wait in line unless a lot of people discover it – not to mention the fact that its on a small street randomly placed along Notre Dame street. I wouldn’t have noticed it if it wasn’t for my Google map.
